Darklight Design undertook a unique and complex project in Fremantle under the new Alternative Freo – Big Thinking about Small Housing initiative, with part of the initiative being to achieve a minimum NatHERS 7 star rating. The project aimed to find a sustainable, lightweight approach to infill housing in suburban areas.
The townhouses were designed with the main focus of achieving good thermal performance outcomes for timber framed small affordable houses. This was done utilising numerous ‘passive’ features and design methods, including but not limited to controlled glass to floor areas using upgraded Low Emission Smart glass, high density insulated walls and connecting breeze paths to ensure maximum ventilation to each room.
Structerre was able to work with Darklight on this project and advise and help navigate the star rating system using lightweight construction methodologies to suit budget restrictions with glazing positioned in appropriate locations for best solar orientations.
