Having been devastated by fire in 2009, the SMRC’s recycling plant was rebuilt, new and improved at the same site. Structerre were engaged to investigate and assess the remains of the foundations of the facility from a structural and geotechnical perspective, and then to design and document the structural elements of the “rebuilt” recycling facility as well as the adjacent two storey administration building and learning centre.

Structerre’s design was based on utilisation of what was left of the original building’s foundation systems, thereby minimising demolition and ground-works costs. Existing conveyor pits, loading docks, retaining walls and footings were incorporated into the new construction. The existing slab on grade was also preserved to suppliment a new surface slab, allowing a much thinner slab to be constructed to service heavy-duty excavator traffic. By working closely with the client and constructor, Structerre produced designs that significantly reduced construction costs on this important community project.
